Trekking in the High Atlas Mountains

Trekking in the High Atlas Mountains

15 JUNE 2016 15:28

The High Atlas Mountains offers an exciting range of trekking (or gentle walking) options, from half day walks to multiple days up the highest peak in North Africa, all in stunning surroundings a short drive south of Marrakech. Naturally Morocco offers qualified, experienced and English speaking guides.

For many visitors, trekking in the Atlas Mountains is the main focus of their trip, but for those who want something less challenging, a casual day walk in beautiful surroundings is a great addition to their holiday.

Our Customers Trekking Experience

Just last month, our clients Caroline Wilkinson and her husband John undertook the exciting challenge of climbing the peak of Mount Toubkal in 3 days. Even during Mid-May, Toubkal summit and the higher peaks are still dusted in snow after the winter which make for some truly dramatic and spectacular scenery which can be clearly seen below in a few of the photos Caroline and John kindly sent to us.

This is a challenge not to be taken lightly and while the trekkers accompanying you can try to tailor the trek, there is still the steep ascending to the peak and also the return to base afterwards.  Mount Toubkal’s peak stands proud at 4,167 metres (13,671 feet) so not a trek for the faint hearted!

For those contemplating a trek in the Atlas Mountains that includes an ascent of Mount Toubkal should seriously consider their fitness levels before embarking on this trek and even though there are elements of the trek that fall into the ‘Moderate’ category, the final ascent to the summit is a real challenge and can push many walking enthusiasts to their limit (it can be even more difficult if the terrain is covered in snow).

For those who are fit enough to take the challenge of climbing the peak of Mount Toubkal, the rewards breathtaking scenery from the summit are well worth the hard work and effort. While this is an amazing opportunity for many, trekking in any mountain range should be taken very seriously and travellers should make sure they are well prepared and ensure that you have comprehensive travel insurance to cover you for any unexpected events. As much as we hate to think of the worst, mountain trekking can be an unpredictable activity.

Tips for Trekking in Morocco

Whilst trekking in Morocco is readily accessible and done in a dramatic environment, we strongly encourage you to use qualified guides. All of the qualified guides we use are locals who have had significant trekking experience (one which is ex-mountain rescue), know the routes intimately, can match routes to the abilities of guests and can take alternative routes if needs arise, and know what to do if the unexpected happens. There are many other Moroccans in the trekking centres touting for business, often at lower prices, but you only get what you pay for.

The sun is strong in Morocco and in the mountains, it can have more of an effect than in the cities – the altitude, lack of shade in areas and gentle cooling breezes all conspire to heat trekkers without their noticing. Make sure that you have a wide-brimmed hat, high factor sun cream and plenty of water, so you can enjoy you exercise without worrying.

Have a look at our List of Treks for further information about duration/area/level of difficulty or call us on 01239 710 814 if you wish to book a trek and discuss the details further.
