The dunes are accessible on camel back from the town, around 60-90 minutes away, and offer desert camps for a night to remember.
The Erg Chebbi offer visitors the chance to see large sand dunes (the largest dunes). After a night in a desert camp you can return to the Kasbah hotel on the edge of the dunes for a shower.
Merzouga is on the south east edge of Morocco, almost due east from Marrakech (about 9 hours? drive), accessible by picturesque routes from either Fez (about 7 hrs) or Skoura/Ouarzazate (about 4-5 hrs).
Occasional sandstorms can bring travel to a halt. In autumn, at the time of date harvest, flies can be a problem.
Behave sensibly to avoid sunstroke - the only well-equipped hospital in the desert is in Ouarzazate.
Merzouga is a small Moroccan town in the Sahara Desert, near the Algerian border. It’s known as a gateway to Erg Chebbi, a huge expanse of sand dunes north of town. West of Merzouga, Dayet Srji is a seasonal salt lake that’s often dry in summer. When full, it attracts a wide range of migratory and desert birds, including desert warblers, Egyptian nightjars and, occasionally, flamingos.
