Ouirgane, a small Berber village in the High Atlas, offers a base for a number of treks that can be incorporated into your Moroccan holiday, or just a location to relax. It is situated in a scenic valley at 1,000 metres above sea level in the High Atlas Mountains around 1 hour’s drive south west of Marrakech.
Ouirgane buzzes with activity on Thursdays when Berber families flock down from the mountains by donkey to the souk. It has become a very popular base for day walks into the Tassa Ouirgane National Park and longer treks to Jbel (Mount) Toubkal and Amizmiz areas, and also benefits from a lake thanks to a recently constructed dam. En route from here to Taroudant, you travel through the spectacular Tiz n Test Pass, site of the renowned 12th century Tin Mal Mosque.
Ouirgane is situated in the High Atlas mountains in the heart of the Toubkal national park at about 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) above sea level. By road it is located 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) south west of Asni and 65 kilometres (40 mi) south of Marrakesh along the S501 road.
