Oualidia

Oualidia is a sleepy and relaxing destination for a Moroccan holiday - a village overlooking a beautiful coastal lagoon

Oualidia is a sleepy and relaxing destination for a Moroccan holiday - a village overlooking a beautiful coastal lagoon (the finest in North Africa). A perfect place for those seeking relaxation in a relatively undiscovered location offering a terrific variety of outdoor activities, including safe swimming and bird watching.

It lies around 3.5 hours north east of Marrakech (2 hours sourth of Casablanca).

The Village

Oualidia sits on the Atlantic coast at the southern edge of a large tidal (sea-water) lagoon, which attracts humans and birds alike, and is famous for its oysters. The lagoon has very calm waters compared with the Atlantic Ocean which lies beyond the bar and protects the lagoon.

A place for all seasons: come here in summer for the festive atmosphere, in autumn for the birds and the warm sea, in winter for peace and sunshine and in spring for birds and flowers.

Location

Oualidia is positioned on the Atlantic coast around half of the way down the Moroccan coastline.

It is accessible by road but it is a significant distance from the nearest other places of interest (it is not on the rail network):

  • Marrakech, the bustling centre of Morocco for most visitors around 3.5 hours south east;
  • Casablanca, which has an international airport around 2 hours' drive north east; and
  • Essaouira, the pretty beach, coastal medina and fishing village around 3.5 hours' journey south.

  • For the active: water sports (wind and kite surfing, canoeing and kayaking, boating with fishing if desired), bike hire, walking and tennis, swimming in the sea or pools.
  • For those wanting to relax: there is a wonderful spa at a luxury hotel outside the village (including heated pool, jacuzzi, sauna, hammam and massage rooms and thalassotherapy (seawater based therapies)) and a smaller spa at a hotel in town.
  • For those who enjoy wildlife: bird watching all year round, though the best time to come is spring or autumn in order to see the migrants, which include flamingoes, the marbled duck and many others. Whale watching is possible between August and October.
  • For those interested in history and culture: there are ancient forts and kasbahs at several villages in the vicinity notably at the vast Gharbia Kasbah, the potteries at Safi, the lovely walled medina of Portuguese origin at El Jadida (including the fortification of Mazagan, a UNESCO World Heritage site), and Lalla Fatna, just 2 km outside the main village provides an alternative beach, all within about an hour of the village.
