I know we recommend trips to the Sahara desert on a regular basis, but for good reason. This is just one of the fascinating and beautiful regions of Morocco and a really exciting adventure. Not just for the intrepid travellers, but suitable for all who are looking for a memorable holiday somewhere hot and exotic. It's also an insightful experience for families travelling with their children and a wonderful opportunity to explore one of nature’s great wonders. A highly recommended trip for those who are looking for something different when searching for their next holiday destination.

When to go and what to see

The best time to visit the desert is during the spring or autumn as the summer months can get excruciatingly hot! Daytime temperatures in the desert region can easily exceed 50 degrees in June, July & August, but spring and autumn temperatures are much more manageable at around 30-35 degrees. In our experience, this trip is best not to be rushed and while on a map, Morocco can be deceptively small, in reality, it takes over 9 hours to reach by car from Marrakech. However, it is well worth the long journey to see the breath taking sights along the way such as the spectacular Tiz N Tichka Mountain Pass, the famous World Heritage site of Ait Benhaddou; the setting for many movies, the majestic Dades & Todra Gorges, stunning earth architecture and last but not least, the Saharan sand dunes to spend the night in a traditional Berber tent.

In short, it's an exciting adventure and a truly unforgettable experience. There's something quite magical and enchanting about the Sahara desert, climbing atop a camel and trekking through the golden sands which stretch as far as the eye can see into the horizon and watching the sunset and sunrise in this awe inspiring landscape.

Which itinerary?

For the best experience, we recommend about 10 nights to allow the time to travel the distance with overnight stops to explore each area along the way. It is also a good idea to include either the start and/or end in Marrakech allowing for any late flight arrivals/early departures. For those with less time to spare for their Moroccan adventure, it is possible to do this in 7 nights, but means a little less time to explore.
