A Day On Holiday In Taroudant

A Day On Holiday In Taroudant

6 OCTOBER 2015 16:06

A little knowledge can go a long way in easing fears for those new customers who have not been on holiday to Morocco before, and a common questions is the general “what’s it like there?” so I write below a typical day on my last holiday in Taroudant as a taste of what to expect.

Moroccan Breakfast By The Pool

We arrived in Taroudant yesterday. We had flown into Marrakech (direct flights from Bristol, which suited us) for a couple of days resting before heading over the stunning High Atlas Mountain pass – marginally scary but our driver was relatively cautious on our request.

So today we woke in the peace and tranquillity of a riad in the heart of the ancient medina town of Taroudant.

This is how a holiday should start

A Moroccan riad is a special place – a beautifully converted family house now a boutique hotel with all the personable charm and character you would expect. Opening our eyes we immediately knew we were on holiday somewhere special as our room had a distinctive Moroccan feel that hotels cannot provide.

We headed out into the central courtyard for a table by the pool. The sky was a brilliant blue and the air was cool after the night time chill but we could feel warmth just coming through (Autumn and Spring are ideal times for Taroudant, but there is still warmth in mid-winter, and mid-summer is OK as the searing heat of the desert doesn’t get to Taroudant).

There were muted noises from the kitchen and soon our breakfast of excellent coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, a selection of Moroccan breads, pancakes, sweet spreads and fruit arrived.

We could have sat there for hours but shall leave that for another day.

Things to Do

Taroudant is away from the beaten trail and offers a varety of day excursions – a selection of options to gain a cultural insight.

We had chosen to join a trip to a Berber village a short drive away. The day goes fast in such company, with a short walk, a little lunch, lots of mint tea and much chatting we were soon back to our riad.

The next day we took ourselves for a wander around the medina but today we had time for a little drink before dinner (we always carry a duty free bottle for places that do not have an alcohol licence), which we had chosen to have in the riad (we had ordered food that morning before our trip).

A Smart Moroccan Dinner

Dinner in the riad was a classic Moroccan tajine topped and tailed by a simple starter and pudding, simply delicious and a perfect end to an exciting day.
