A Day in Marrakech

A Day in Marrakech

15 SEPTEMBER 2015 15:39

Many of our customers have a little fear of the unknown before they book and holiday to Morocco, so I write below a typical day on my last holiday in Marrakech to give a taste of what to expect.

Moroccan Breakfast On The Roof Terrace

Yesterday we arrived into Morocco, a budget airline direct flight into Marrakech Airport is nothing to write home about but it was fast and got us here with our transfers into town taking us to our riad in the medina taking less than 15 minutes.

Today we wake sensing we are somewhere different and special. We are in a riad not a chain hotel and as we become conscious we are already immersed in Morocco. Earlier we heard the distant call to prayer and now as we dress we hear the muted noises of the staff in the central courtyard preparing our breakfast.

We wander into the bright light on the roof terrace. It is only 9am but the sky is a brilliant blue and the colours are intense everywhere we look with the High Atlas mountains rising dramatically in the south and the temperature is lovely and warm with the night chill disappearing fast.

Breakfast is a simple affair – excellent coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, a selection of Moroccan breads and pancakes and sweet spreads and fruit.

To be honest I could just take out a book and stay rooted there all day, but I’m off for a wander.

Through The Moroccan Souks

Marrakech is a tourist destination and the souks reflect this but they still retain a charm that draws me back every time for a gentle stroll.

The ancient markets meander north of the main square and sell a wonderful selection of little pieces to take home targeted at the holiday makers that later in the day will throng through this area. Ceramics, wood work, glass ware and iron ware create a shoppers paradise but that’s not for me – I just like to wander through and have a cup of mint tea, and all I have to do is say an occasional “no thank you” and that is as much hassle as I have to contend with.

Marrakech Sights

After a quick lunch of skewer kebab in bread with hot sauce from a street shop, a little treat for me, we head out to the Majorelle gardens as our choice of afternoon entertainment. Alternatively we could have visited the tombs, the Ben Yousef Medersa or taken a day trip down to the mountains, but today we wander to stretch our legs and explore further on foot.

A day or two is always enough for me, I like to explore further afield – perhaps to Essaouira or the High Atlas.

A Smart Moroccan Dinner

We’ve had a couple of Moroccan sweet snacks during the day and on our return to our riad with plenty of water, by the evening we are famished and Marrakech has an excellent selection of restaurants to choose from and tonight we have decided not to stay and eat in at our riad as we did last night on arrival (pre-booked by Naturally Morocco).

We have a short walk to Café Arabe this evening, a smart restaurant with roof terrace bar set a walk away from the evening hustle of the main square. After a drink the food is excellent, Moroccan based with plenty of choice and our walk through the quiet alleys back to our riad tops off the day brilliantly.
