Cool Guide To Marrakech

Cool Guide To Marrakech

3 OCTOBER 2014 10:42

Annabelle Thorpe wrote the Cool Guide to Marrakech for the Times on Saturday 27 September 2014. This included a number of her choices of best boutique hotels to stay in in and around Marrakech. A few years later, we still think she is right.

Included in her list were the following riads that we include in our portfolio

Riad Houma – Best Chic but Cheap

Riad Houma

“Entirely renovated in 2012, the eight rooms at Houma have a pared-down, crisp-and-cream feel and, in spite of the reasonable price, there’s an agreeably luxurious feel, with a roof-top whirlpool bath and firelit lounge. For the ultimate indulgence, book a suite and soak away the stresses in a sunken bath.”

Riyad Edward – Best For Tradition

Riyad Edward

“This charming 10-room riad – just 15 minutes’ walk from the main square – has one of the highest roof terraces in the medina, perfect for sitting on at sunset and sampling the hotel’s traditional home-cooked food after a day’s haggling in the souk. As well as its pretty pool, it has its own hammam.”

Dar Ayniwen – Best For Garden Lovers

Dar Ayniwen

“If there is a more beautiful garden in the whole of Marrakech I’ve yet to find it. Stately palms throw pools of shade across the pristine lawns, vivid swathes of hibiscus and bougainvillea tangle through citrus trees and the cerulean pool sparkles in the sunlight. It still has the feel of the family home it once was; antiques litter the languidly grand house and the eight suites mix opulence with enough stylistic quirks to keep them interesting.”

Dar Zemora – Best For Couples

Dar Zemora

“The perfect choice if you’re looking for an indulgent few days away a deux; Zemora is a smorgasbord of jewel-coloured fabrics, soft silk drapes and enticing sofas piled high with cushions. The elegant house has just three rooms and three suites, with local art on the walls and soft cream linen on the beds, while the tranquil garden is the perfect place for lazy afternoons a world away from the chaos of the city.”

Les Jardins De La Medina – Best Pool

Les Jardins de la Medina

“If you’re looking for a city break with a dollop of fly-and-flop on the side, this is the perfect choice, the proper-sized pool is flanked by comfortable loungers, while upstairs the network of roof terraces is dotted with daybeds and long white sofas shaded with feathery drapes. The 36 rooms wrap around the gorgeous gardens, studded with citrus and olive trees, while the restaurant brings a touch of French style to proceedings.”
