Autumn is Wonderful in Morocco

Whilst November can be great in the UK – late autumnal colours and frosty mornings – in Morocco November is a wonderful time. The peak mid summer heat has fell and truly gone but warm days (early to mid 20s deg C typically) make travelling a comfortable experience, and the majority of holiday crowds have gone.

Other than possibly chilly evenings, the only significant downside of the winter months are possible rainy periods, with peak rainfall running from November through to February, but the heaviest of this tends to be in the more northern cities and in absolute terms is modest compared to the UK at that time – its obviously just luck whether you will be affected (there were flash floods in the late summer this year, so it can happen at anytime).

So it’s a great time to holiday in Morocco, but where to go in Morocco?

An Adventure to the Desert

One of our senior travel consultants is heading to the desert in November and I’m jealous of her. The desert in November is a place, with seemingly endless landscapes and comfortable temperatures (average of 26 deg C), although the evenings may get a little chilly but that should make a stay in a desert camp even more romantic.

The desert is an adventure – it is a significant distance to travel from the major international airports (Marrakech or possibly Agadir or Fez) – so we recommend not to rush that trip but to enjoy the journey to and from the desert and explore some of the fascinating and beautiful places on route, most obviously the High Atlas mountains and valleys and the oases of the region. /destinations/deep-desert/

Don’t Dismiss Time In Marrakech

We rarely focus on Marrakech as in the peak summer months it can be rather swamped by visitors but it is an interesting city and well worth spending a few days in as part of a multi-centred trip.

Marrakech is one of the Imperial cities of Morocco and is full of history and every day bustle. The medina wall is huge and dramatic and within it is a large range of riads, traditional Moroccan family houses, that have now been refurbished and now offer boutique accommodation with a taste of Morocco. With temperatures in the early 20s deg C and good links with other places to visit, Marrakech is a fine option in November.

And Linking to Taroudant and the High Atlas

Whilst Marrakech can be very interesting, we normally recommend to split a week between a couple of destinations and in November the southern medina town of Taroudant is a great option. Driving over the passes of the High Atlas mountains before dropping into the area south is a breath-taking experience and something that should probably be avoided in mid-winter (it does snow in that region, and the roads are best tackled in good conditions).

Taroudant is a pleasant town with options to experience the Real Morocco at a leisurely pace, but you could decide that trekking in the High Atlas for a couple of days is more your thing or a few days on the beach in Essaouira or Oualidia would make your holiday complete.
