Ideas for Holidays in Morocco in September

Ideas for Holidays in Morocco in September

5 AUGUST 2014 07:58

Phew, that was a scorcher

Morocco’s summer peak heat is subsiding in September and the whole of Morocco is opening up for holiday visitors. In fact many holiday makers may see September as a perfect month to travel, but that’s a subjective view - temperatures are in their late 20s and even into their early 30s deg C in many inland towns and cities and the desert region is still in the mid 30s, so perhaps its worth another month’s wait to ride a camel to a desert camp.

So let’s look at the places have come into their prime in September.

The Imperial Cities of the North (and heading further south)

The contrasting sister cities of Fez and Meknes, connected by train in under an hour, are now back to a more modest temperature of around 30 deg C. Whilst in the peak summer exploring these fascinating cities is generally only sensible in the earlier morning and later afternoon, in September you can take your time and get lost at your own pace.

Exploring further by the northern train it is around 3 hours on to Rabat on the Atlantic coast and around another 4 hours on to Marrakech– so creating a multi centred is relatively easy and comfortable. Fez and Marrakech have a the best range of accommodation, but the accommodation in Meknes and Rabat include classic raids and have fewer visitors so I believe are worth exploring.

Morocco’s Atlantic Coastal Towns Are In Their Prime

Average temperatures can be a little deceptive and those for Essaouira (23 deg C for September) is an example as sea breezes are subsiding and the sunshine is still strong.

Essaouira is a town with a walled medina ending with a picturesque fishing port and a huge sandy beach a short walk away. Meander through the medina or try a water sports (surfing, kite surfing and windsurfing kit hire and tuition available – but these are fickle sports and conditions may not be ideal for any), and take your pick from the excellent selection of accommodation.

Oualidia is small town set by a beautiful lagoon lying a little further north than Essaouira. Whilst Essaouira is a significant draw for holiday makers, Oualidia is around one hour longer transfer time from Marrakech  and accommodation options focus on the higher quality/ more exclusive.

To the north of Essaouira is Oualidia and to the south (past Agadir) are the Souss Massa National Park and Mirleft - beautiful places to relax and both interesting options.

But The Whole Of Morocco Is Possible

Whilst I focus on certain destinations above, let’s not forget other excellent places to go to –

Taroudant, 1 hour’s drive inland from Agadir, is a walled medina and an authentic Moroccan town the base of our Real Morocco programme – a range of cultural excursions and activities in and around the town.

Chefchaouen is a remote small town in the foothills of the Rif mountains (between Fez and Tangier) and one of the prettiest in Morocco with whitewashed and blue highlighted houses, and a stunning backdrop of mountains scenery.

The desert is becoming cooler by mid-September, but perhaps best left until October if you are able to do so.
