One common request from our customers is for recommendations on where to eat and drink. Whilst every city and most towns have possible places, which we can share with you during the booking process, we’ll highlight below a popular option for those guests staying in Marrakech.

Morocco Holiday recommendation - Kozybar and Le Tanjia

Kozybar sits on top of Le Tanjia restaurant, located close to Palais El Madii 15 minutes’ walk south of the main square (Djemma el Fnaa). They are poorly signed, tucked away towards the corner of a pedestrianized small square, but can be popular – so we recommend booking a table for Le Tanjia restaurant if you wish to eat there, and also ask for further help from your riad on how to find it.

Kozybar has an indoor and terrace area and, whilst the view is not special, the dim lighting makes it very atmospheric after dark and an enjoyable place to relax with a Casa beer after a day of taking in the medina with all its hustle and bustle. Le Tanjia downstairs is a medium sized restaurant but is often bursting at the seams (and that is before any dance show begins). It serves a good range of Moroccan and European foods, well cooked and sensibly priced (MHD 160 for a main course, a little over £12 at current exchange rates) – although there are better restaurants if you are after fine dining. With a normally tight packed atmosphere it is a lively place to eat and on many evenings has a floor show of traditional dancing – Moroccan women who weave their way between the tables (perhaps not to everyone’s taste, but for most it is generally entertaining).

Morocco – a caveat on alcohol for holidaymakers

Morocco is an Islamic country and, as such, alcohol is not as prevalent as in many other holiday destinations. Whilst Morocco produces its own brands of wines and beers that are available during your holiday, they will not be available everywhere.

Bars are rare and often difficult to find, alcohol is sold in few shops, and not all restaurants offer alcohol (especially near mosques).

However, you may drink your own alcohol (duty free etc) in your own riad, we can advise on which riads offer alcohol in their own bar or restaurant, larger hotels often have public bars and there are a number of public bars and restaurants serving alcohol in some of the major cities, of which the Kozybar and Le Tanjia restaurant are good examples.
