Ideas for Holidays in Morocco in February

Ideas for Holidays in Morocco in February

18 DECEMBER 2013 11:45

Head south – that’s our jist.

Whilst the whole of Morocco is relatively temperate and pleasant in February (average temperature range from 16 deg Celsius in Tangier in the north to 23 deg Celsius in Zagora in the desert in the south west) evenings and nights in the north can be surprisingly chilly.

Additionally, when it rains in Morocco, it rains most in the north in winter (100mm mean rainfall in February in Tangier, 72mm in Fez) – best to visit the fascinating north in spring or autumn.

The Desert for Starters

The most obvious suggestion in February is to head to the Sahara, but this is for the more adventurous holiday maker. The Sahara is generally not recommended in the peak summer (yes, it gets  very hot) so make the most of the cooler weather in February.

Seemingly endless horizons and night skies, riding camels to a night camp and sleeping in a Berber tent await you after you drive to M’Hamid, the end of the paved road, with interesting stops in the Skoura oasis and Zagora en route.

Flights into Agadir or Marrakech are suitable for any such adventure, with those into Marrakech generally requiring a drive through the breath-taking High Atlas mountains, which are often snow capped in mid winter.

Taroudant, Anti-Atlas and the Souss

The more comfortable option for those seeking to relax and not have significant time in cars is Taroudant and the region just south, which has received significant press coverage recently.

Interesting in its own right and offering various options of cultural insight, Taroudant is worth a few days stay and is a good base from which to explore further south.

Heading south takes you into the little explored region of the Anti Atlas with Tafraoute in the beautiful Amelyn Valley a good stopping off point, with numerous agadirs (fortified houses) to explore as you go.

Heading back to the coast takes you to Agadir and, for those with an interest in nature, the Souss Massa National Park is a great place to visit. Although the peak season for twitchers is in November and around April as the migratory birds move through, there is a great variety of wildlife at most times of the year.
