Camel Trek on the Atlantic Coast
Trek Grade: Easy to Moderate
You will be picked up from your accommodation to take the short drive down the Essaouira water front to the ranch, some 3 kilometres south of Essaouira. Here you will begin the camel trek, which lasts for about 6.5 hours.
After meeting your camel and been given some basic instructions the trek starts by making your way over a number of sand dunes with varied vegetation from grasses to shrubs to small trees. The trail takes you past the remains of a house once the temporary residence of famous rock star Jimi Hendrix, then to the beach where you ride alongside Atlantic Ocean, with the camels occasionally dipping their hooves into the water.
After about an hour there is time for a brief pause and a chance to dismount, when it's wise to have a drink, which we suggest you carry in a backpack. After this the trek begins again returning back along the beach with the view of Essaouira in front of you. On the return there is an opportunity to pause to observe the crumbling remains of a 16th century Portuguese fort, which is inaccessible as it lies surrounded by the ocean some 200 feet offshore. A path alongside the river is the route back to the ranch, from where you will then return to your accommodation by car.

"A lovely camel ride - the guide, Mohammed, was really sweet with my son, 4, and went to lot of trouble to point out interesting things like squid, starfish, hermit crabs, flamingoes, so I would recommend them heartily." K Wilcox,
