Tiz-n-Test Pass Hike (High Atlas) via the Souss Valley

Said to be the most spectacular mountain pass in Africa and certainly in Morocco, the Tiz-n-Test Pass at 2092 metres (6,863 feet) is passable thanks to an amazing piece of French engineering.

Experience great changes in the types of crops, vegetation and scenery as you ascend the pass: from crops of oranges, you ascend through almond and walnut growing zones; from forests of argan you travel up through pine, evergreen oak and eventually, above the tree line, to dwarf palm and juniper scrub. Wildlife is equally varied: birds such as Black Wheatear, Tristram?s Warbler and Green Woodpecker and rare birds of prey such as Bonelli?s Eagle and Booted Eagle may be seen; wildflowers, particularly in spring and summer, are varied; they include endemic storkbills, pungent wild lavender (collected by local girls to sell) and thyme which attracts itinerant beekeepers. See cave and various rock formations which merge with the isolated villages built into the valley sides below.

The 57 mile journey from Taroudant takes about 1.5 hours; it starts with an easy drive through the Souss valley with excellent views of the western High Atlas and the Anti Atlas Mountains, then the slow ascent begins - with breathtaking views into the valleys below- via a series of hairpin bends. The trip is thus not recommended for those with more than mild vertigo.

On arrival at the summit, you may choose to take a hot drink and a simple but tasty egg tagine served by the little auberge which commands far reaching views. After lunch the hike (of about 3 hours? length) begins: you walk down to villages, passing remarkable cultivated terraces en route. After a break for refreshments, you will make a steep ascent to the pick-up point further down the pass. On the way back, you may choose to stop to look at places of interest such as a visit for a drink at an old palace at Ouled Berhil. Artists might prefer to sit and sketch or paint rather than walk.

Note: this trip is not available in inclement weather when views or road safety will be adversely affected. You may make a (4 hour) transfer to Marrakech via a continuation of this route; in case of bad weather there is an alternative route via the new Agadir-Marrakech motorway.
