Day Trip to the High Atlas Mountains (Ouirgane)

It can also be a base for a number of treks that can be incorporated into your Moroccan holiday, or just a location to relax. It is situated in a scenic valley at 1,000 metres above sea level in the High Atlas Mountains around 1 hour's drive south west of Marrakech. A lovely day out from Marrakech (without any trekking needed) to see the local countryside (trip can also be taken from Imlil/Ourika Valley).

Starting off from your accommodation in Marrakech (or from Imlil/Ourika Valley) take the scenic journey to the lovely little Berber village of Ouirgane. Your driver will stop when you wish for photo opportunities or for a break if needed or just to admire the views as they unfold.

Ouirgane buzzes with activity on Thursdays when Berber families flock down from the mountains by donkey to the souk. It has become a very popular base for day walks into the Tassa Ouirgane National Park and longer treks to Jbel (Mount) Toubkal and Amizmiz areas, and also benefits from a lake thanks to a recently constructed dam.

Option of visiting the 12th century Tin Mal Mosque and take lunch in Chez Momo; a lovely traditional local Auberge. Relax in the garden overlooking the mountains and lake while you eat. Cost of lunch is not included.

A Typical Day's Trip to Ouirgane

1. Depart Marrakech (this day trip can also be taken from Imlil/Ourika) at 10am
2. Arrive in Ouirgane at approx 11am
3. Explore the local area and traditions of a typical Berber village (if visiting on Thursday, explore the Berber market). Take in some lunch at Chez Momo (a local auberge) and enjoy the mountain/lake views
4. Take a visit to the 12th century Tin Mal Mosque
5. Depart the mountains at 4pm for your return to Marrakech (or Imlil/Ourika) at 5pm
