Medina of Tetouan

Tetouan, formerly known as Titawin, is 60 km east of Tangier and has a clearly defined and alusian heritage reflecting its occupation by Moors from Andalusia in the 17th century. It considered to be 'an exceptionally well preserved and complete example of this type of historic town, displaying all the features of the high Andalusian culture' (UNESCO 1997).

The medina is filled with beautifully white-washed and tiled buildings and in particular low houses and the Moorish, Ottoman and Andalusian influances are apparent everywhere. The souk itself is very traditional with weavers, jewellers, potters, leather workers and carpets sellers, set alongside spice merchants, fish and produce. The Royal Palace in Tétouan is situated just outside the medina, and there is a public square in front of it.
