Midelt

Midelt is a market town in the Middle Atlas Mountains; it has a busy souk on Sundays and offers an ideal mid-point place to break the long drive from Fez or Meknes to the north and the Saharan dunes at Merzouga to the south.

Well worth a visit are: Kasbah Meriem outside the town, a weaving school run by Franciscan sisters or, for the more adventurous, the Cirque de Jaffar, a natural arena beside the 45 km long mountain face with its peak Jbel Ayyachi (3,747m), which may be accessed by 4x4 only which you may choose to arrange through your accommodation. The main commercial activities in the area is farming now that the copper and lead mines have closed.
