Marrakech Surrounds

For visitors to Morocco who want to sample the delights of the bustle of Marrakech Medina, but be based in the peace, beauty and slightly cooler environs of an oasis or the countryside, there are a few exceptional options in the Marrakech Palmery and other nearby rural areas. 

The Palmery

Marrakech Palmery (Palmerie or Palmeraie) lies on the north east edge of the medina and covers around 12,000 hectares. According to folklore an invading Almohad army in the 12th century camped by the oasis and their discarded date stones have resulted in around 150,000 palm trees ("ayniwen") seen here now. Today it is occupied by luxurious residences and hotels, and offers calm and tranquility away from the bustle of the medina. The heart of the palmerie is around 20 minutes' drive from the Djemaa el Fna, 25 minutes from the airport and around 1 hour from the Ourika valley, the nearest part of the High Atlas mountains.

Apart from the palmerie there are a few other exceptional places to stay within 30 minutes' drive from the medina, allowing visitors other options for a high level of comfort and peace, with easy access to the numerous attractions of the medina.
