Walking in the foothills of the High Atlas

The following short treks in the High Atlas mountains can be taken from Marrakech. The treks, which are graded easy to moderate, start from various centres within 90 minutes of the city's medina, and have been designed to provide an introduction to the magnificent landscapes and Berber villages of the High Atlas.

Day trip from Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains taking in Moulay Brahim Gorges and, on Saturdays only, Asni Market, before embarking on a short (4km) trek from Imlil to the Berber villages of Aroumd and Achayn.

A relatively gentle trek of about 4 hours, it includes some fascinating Berber villages, views of irrigated terraced fields, a pilgrimage site perched in the mountains, and excellent views of the major peaks in the Toubkal National Park.

Ourika Day Trek

This is a simple walk (trek would overstate it) near the beautiful village of Setti Fatma where, weather permitting, you can head up to a scenic series of waterfalls before a lunch in a restaurant nearby, whilst enjoying the cooler mountain air.

Day trek through the villages of the High Atlas south of Ouirgane, taking in the village of Tinzert where salt is mined from huge wells and thesuperb views of the Tarabaza, Kik and Moulay Brahim plateaus with the Tizi n’Test Pass and Jbel Oukaïmeden beyond.
