OVERNIGHT Camel Trek FROM ESSAOUIRA

Camel Trek on the Atlantic Coast

Trek Grade: Easy to Moderate

The scenery on the treks is very varied and beautiful. The longer the trek, the more variety you see: sandy beaches, estuary (the one that inspired Jimi Hendrix's "Castles in the Sand"!), dunes, scrub, woodlands and the crumbling remains of a 16th century Portuguese fort.

2 days and 1 night Pick up from hotel at 10 am take the short drive down the Essaouira water front to the ranch at Diabat, some 3 kilometres south of Essaouira.

Depart at 10:30am and trek for 6 hours with approx 1 hour break, arriving at the camp is 5:30 pm. You may choose to sleep either in a large traditional tent, which sleeps several people or, on request, in modern 2 man tents. Breakfast at 8:30 am, arrive back at the ranch at 10:30 am and transfer by car to your accommodation in Essaouira by 11am. Options for extended treks of 3 days/ 2 nights and 4 days /3 nights are also available - in each case the trek ends early in the morning after breakfast on the last day of the activity.

What's Included

Included are tuition, public liability insurance, meals, drinks, camping equipment except sleeping bags. Longer treks are usually 2, 3 or 6 days in length, but can be made to measure.

"The best part of our trip was undoubtedly the camel trek with overnight stay in the dunes. Mustapha, our guide, was fascinating, knowledgeable and charming, and he really cared for the beautiful camels. The fish tagine that was cooked for us on the open fire by the lovely chef was out of this world, and the lunchtime food of chargrilled chicken was scrumptious. Abdulkrim told jokes, did tricks and played the drums - he made us all laugh hysterically and really topped off a very special day." L Reip 9/07
