A luxurious, stylish, medium-sized boutique hotel from which to see the Saharan dunes, Dar Azawad offer comfort and a very good range of facilities. Guests can choose between miniature kasbahs or suites centred around a beautiful pool set in large grounds with palm trees for shade.

En-Suite Bedroom

Accommodation: There is a choice of superbly and individually designed en suite miniature kasbahs (6 doubles, 4 twins) or the 3 suites all individually designed and 8 new rooms to be added late in 2009. All have a sober exterior in keeping with local style in contrast to the characterful, comfortable and colourful interiors - silk bedcovers, bright Berber rugs and lovely bathrooms.

Location: In the hamlet of Ouled Driss on the south east edge of Morocco (due east of Agadir) on the edge of the Sahara, accessible by picturesque routes through the mountains from Taroudant (8 hrs) or from Marrakech (8.5 hrs), conveniently located in a tiny palm grove amongst the sand dunes south of Zagora.

Services and other points to note: Options include excursions to the fantastic dunes that lie nearby on foot, camel or 4x4 with the option to camp overnight at their secluded nomads' tents, a much superior base to most and trips to learn about the history and culture of local communities. Resident animals include a donkey and friendly dogs. There is a small shop and spa.

Meals: Half board is included. Lunch is available. The owner worked in one of the finest restaurants in Paris and clearly brought his expertise and some French inspiration with him. Beautiful small restaurant with superb food, beautifully presented and professionally served.

Staff: The French owner, Vincent, is a charming, energetic, English/Arab-speaking art collector, who has fulfilled his dream here by creating a responsibly managed hotel in the desert: for example it was the first hotel in the south to recycle its glass and metal.
