Merzouga

Merzouga is effectively the end of the road in Morocco's south east corner and is of interest primarily for the Erg Chebbi dunes, the most accessible large (160 metre high) sand dunes in the country. The dunes are accessible on camel back from the town, around 60-90 minutes away, and offer desert camps for a night to remember.

Overview

The Erg Chebbi offer visitors the chance to see large sand dunes (the largest dunes). After a night in a desert camp you can return to the Kasbah hotel on the edge of the dunes for a shower.

Merzouga is on the south east edge of Morocco, almost due east from Marrakech (about 10 hours’drive), accessible by picturesque routes from either Fez (about 7 hrs) or Skoura/Ouarzazate (about 6 hrs).

Occasional sandstorms can bring travel to a halt. In autumn, at the time of date harvest, flies can be a problem.

Behave sensibly to avoid sunstroke – the only well-equipped hospital in the desert is in Ouarzazate.
