Located in a truly spectacular and peaceful setting, this simple guesthouse forms part of an ongoing restoration project of a fascinating ancient monument. The spacious roof terrace lends itself to relaxation whilst enjoying the lovely views and silence of this unspoiled and little visited part of the Anti Atlas Mountains.

Accommodation: Up to 20 people can be accommodated in 8 rooms, 4 doubles and 4 twins, of which three can take an extra bed and one has 4 beds. Not all rooms have ensuite bathroom, so make sure you have a torch for nocturnal trips to the bathroom. Decoration is simple, but clean and comfortable. Power points are a little scarce. Towels available on request to conserve precious water.

Location: Around 1 hour 45 minutes (105 kms) south of Agadir in a remote area, it provides a good stopping off point en route to Tafraoute.

Services and other points to note: The owner deserves recognition for his efforts to preserve the kasbah: in 1999 he created an association which has had the support of the Minister of Culture and 3 architects from Agadir. It originally housed 38 families, a prison, grain stores, a water tank and a mosque. Treks around the area for between 2 and 7 hours can be arranged with or without a guide. There is a slow satellite internet connection, safe, roof terrace, hammam. Note there is no TV. The kasbah is reached by a flight of 166 steps, hence we suggest carrying an overnight bag rather than taking a large suitcase. There is a small shop selling local produce. Be patient when they answer the “castle” door- it’s quite a walk to the guest house.

Meals: Option of full or half board. Delicious Berber cookery served in the comfortable Moroccan salon or on the roof terrace.

Staff: Jamal is an entertaining and informative host. Together with his wife, Malika, he offers a comprehensive tour of the kasbah and its environs, although he does not speak much English.
