Western High Atlas Berber Trek- 7 Nights / 8 Days

Trek Grade: Moderate to Strenuous

Western High Atlas Berber Trek

This itinerary offers a diversified approach to the Western High Atlas peaks as well as the local traditional Berber life in an almost tourist-free area. One day allows sportive trekkers to climb closer to the highest peaks and along the last sheepfolds up to 3000m altitude. The routes are often quite lush as water is everywhere, allowing welcome baths and showers from time to time on the way.

This trek is accessible to anyone as it can be adapted to your individual needs: number of camping nights, differentials, walking time, etc. so do not hesitate to ask for changes.

Day 1: Tamdousnous gorge (800 m alt)

1 hour drive by 4x4 from Taroudant to Afensou Berber village. Welcome at the Berber guesthouse Les Terrasses de l’Atlas by Luc and Hafida, your hosts.  Introductory and warming up day walk to Azul panoramic crest amid argan trees (300m ascent). Then walk back to Afensou through two nice gorges and oasis gardens, with a stop for bathing. Night at the guesthouse and Berber meal with your hosts.

Day 2: Zaouia Bouchnine pass (1200 m alt)

Easy walking amongst barley and corn fields in the shade of olive and carob trees. Then tortuous goat paths (total of 500 m ascents) with great scenic views over the Atlas peaks, with a panoramic picnic on a crest.  Wild bivouac with a traditional tagine for dinner on the Zaouia Bouchnine pass.

Day 3: Tigfild, in the sky (1900 m alt)

A circular long walk (20 km, 1000 m positive differential) will allow you to reach much higher Berber villages and never see any tourists and offers incredible views over the peaks. Endless but very nice paths will offer diversified landscapes and some opportunities to refresh yourself by a spring or a stream.  Same bivouac place at the pass.

Day 4: Panoramic crests (1400 m alt)

Morning gentle walk through upper fields, amid almond trees and enjoying continuous great views over the green valley and high peaks. Free afternoon at the guesthouse with various possible activities if wanted: hammam, hammoc, cooking lesson, bathing at the spring, etc. Comfortable night at Les Terrasses de l’Atlas.

Day 5: Issoual waterfalls (2000 m alt)

You could walk the whole way or just partly and then jump in the 4x4 to follow an amazing track till the remote village of Issoual. Donkeys will then carry all luggage till the camping spot right in the middle of the highest mountains of the area and close to several small waterfalls. Camping along a water channel below walnut trees.

Day 6: Aoulime sheepfolds (2500 m alt and more…)

From the base camp, you can walk as high as you want to the highest crests with a nice and refreshing stop at some sheepfolds perched above a lovely stream. Then to access higher altitudes, it is just a question of finding your way as there is no longer any path, muscles and breath… Same camping spot.

Day 7: Descent to paradise (back to 800 m alt)

There are several options to walk down back to the guesthouse, depending on your fitness. Panoramas are diversified and easy walking allows to benefit from the great views. Night at the guesthouse.

Day 8: Transfer

Transfer to Taroudant, Agadir or Marrakech.
