Morocco Holiday Choices – Marrakech Medina or Palmery

Marrakech, due to the great choice of flights to its international airport, is the gateway to the Morocco or a destination in its own right for most visitors to the country.

In the medina of Marrakech, a short drive from the airport, you can get a taste of Moroccan life and culture. This can easily be combined with a second (or more) destination(s) on the coast, in the mountains or further afield, e.g. the Saharan oases and desert.

However, Marrakech offers a choice of location for your accommodation each with its own appeal - either in the Marrakech Medina itself or in the nearby Marrakech Palmery.

Holiday in Marrakech Medina – riads and other accommodation

The bustling ancient Medina of Marrakech is an area popular with tourists with sprawling souks and numerous other sites of interest.

The accommodation in the Medina includes riads and dars, old family houses closed off to the outside world that have been converted into boutique accommodation for visitors. Staying in a riad or dar is an experience in itself, and there is a wide selection of style, facilities and pricing on offer. Being town houses they are very convenient for exploring the Medina; however, being town houses they have limited space (hence if they offer a pool it would normally be a plunge pool rather than a swimming pool), are in the bustle of the town (hence may have noise from the nearby mosque) and can have internal noise (rooms are normally arranged around a central courtyard).

Staying in the Marrakech Palmery – boutique hotels

The Marrakech Palmery, Palmerie or Palmeraie is a residential oasis that lies on the north east edge of the medina, just 20 minutes' drive from the main square, and covers around 12,000 hectares.

The boutique hotels of this area are of a higher rating, comfort and price than is typical in the Medina, they also offer more space, are set in lush surroundings and (those in our portfolio) have large swimming pools (which come into their own outside of the winter period). Additionally, being away from the hustle and bustle of the town these accommodations are more peaceful that those in the Medina, but excursions into the medina are a drive away rather than a short stroll, hence need to be arranged.

In Summary

Accommodation in the Medina include riads and dars, which are an interesting experience for many visitors and offer easy walking access to the sites of the Medina, but at a cost of space and peace.

Accommodation in the Palmery offers greater space, peace and comfort that is typically found in the Medina, but at a greater financial price and less convenience for ad hoc exploration of the Medina.

Therefore, like most things – what is right for you depends on what you are looking for in your holiday and we will help choose on the right location and accommodation for you.
