Holiday Street Food In Morocco - Larger Snacks

With a large breakfast in the morning at your riad, typically continental style with the addition of Moroccan pancakes, and a full dinner in the evening at a restaurant or your boutique hotel, a full midday meal is not always wanted – in fact I end to avoid these as my waistline expands.

What I need are a few tasty and simple morsels to keep me going, and there’s a lovely selection to watch out for and not to be wary of trying during your excursions, and all at a price designed for the local Moroccan.

The Kebab Stall

Please don’t be put off by the idea of a kebab, what passes for a kebab in the UK is not the same - in Morocco a kebab is a simple thing that does not ooze mess.

Scattered around the medinas of the towns and cities are kebab stalls on the street side and small shops. During typical lunch hours you will smell meat roasting and a number of locals eating from (typically) brown paper.

The most common kebab is kefta, minced meat on a skewer, which is thoroughly cooked and scrapped into pitta bread. I will either it is as is, or may try a random sauce. It is a small meal that will cost only a couple of dirham – language will probably be a barrier, but with a bit of pointing and a scribbled price (maybe a little help from another customer) you’ll get what you want at a fair price.

I do avoid any salad topping in case of bugs and I indicate that I want the meat cooked until nicely toasted on the outside to ensure cooked throughout, but I do not believe that I have ever picked up a stomach bug from these and I have tried several dozen.

The Tajine Stall

The tajine is synonymous with Morocco and simple stalls can be found in many places – a man with up to a dozen tajines (the clay pot) cooking on coals. Personally I do not go for these at lunch as I prefer the greater options available in the evening meal.

However, they are a tasty option when you want a simple meal - sit at the side of the road, communicate with the vendor what he has on offer and sample the simple delights that he has been stewing for the last hour or so.

As it is served straight from the dish, the chance of stomach upset is minimal.
