Holiday In Fez and Chefchaouen

The north of Morocco is an amazing place to take your holiday. The scenery of the countryside, especially the Middle Atlas and Rif mountains, is spectacular and a little more lush than the more arid regions further south; and, the cities and towns are less touristy than Marrakech yet are full of interest and places to explore.

I don’t want you just to take our word for all that, better still is to have a read of our customer Mr Tanner who has recently visited Fez and Chefchaouen :

We Loved Fez

“Once again, my wife and I spent another excellent holiday in Morocco thanks to Naturally Morocco's expert organisation. Although we've always visited the Atlas mountain regions (High, Middle and Anti) in the past, we decided to give the north a try this time. We therefore spent 4 nights in Fes and 6 nights in Chefchaouen. We both loved Fes and would definitely consider going there again. We stayed in Riad La Cle de Fes which is in a great location on a quiet edge of the old medina but within easy walking distance of the main sights and a good selection of restaurants and souks. The staff were all very helpful, friendly and welcoming. Our room (Bab Guisse) was large, well decorated and comfortable and the en-suite had a superb shower (hot water every day and at all times!). We were the only residents at the time so we managed a sneaky peek in the other rooms and all looked equally spacious and comfortable. We only ate dinner there on the last night but it turned out to be one of the best meals we had during our whole holiday. Breakfast was always good and VERY plentiful.

We had a half day walking tour of Fes with Hassan who was very easy-going, happy, friendly, patient and knowledgeable. We never felt too rushed, overwhelmed or worn out at any time during the tour and found it fairly easy to re-locate all the places we wanted to visit again on subsequent days.

Moving onto Chefchaouen, we arrived mid-afternoon and found the place to be very bustling but lovely to look at and almost fairy-tale like in its setting in the Rif Mountains. Our accommodation was in Hotel Dar Echaouen which turned out to be a very good, tidy, ideally located and well run hotel. Our suite was large, well-kept and comfortable with a stunning view of the old medina. All the staff were efficient and polite but it took a couple of days before the ice was broken and we were able to get along on less formal terms. A decent sized pool area was welcome after a day walking around (and up and down) the medina, and we always managed to find vacant sun loungers and clean towels awaiting us. Breakfast was a bit predictable and a little un-exiting but OK apart from that. Otherwise, we didn't dine at the hotel so are unable to comment on the food overall.

Chefchaouen itself is not that big, so it’s easy to get around and find decent places to eat, shop and sight-see. The restaurants in the main square aren’t too good but we found much better establishments in the back streets. All in all, we both found Chefchaouen charming to look at but too touristy for our tastes.

As for the taxi transfers; as usual all drivers were friendly, courteous, helpful and punctual as we have come to expect on every holiday we’ve booked through Naturally Morocco. Overall, another very welcome, enjoyable and well organised holiday in Morocco.

We are already looking forward to planning our next visit there in 2016 and will definitely be booking through Naturally Morocco again. Many thanks to Sue, Karen and the team for continuing to make our Moroccan holidays so wonderful and memorable".

We bespoke every holiday to your wishes, so talk to us about what you would like from a holiday.

Fez is a remarkable city and our guide, Hassan, makes the city come alive. Chefchaoun is a small town and picture post card pretty but, as it is very small, it may feel touristy with relatively very few visitors there.
