Do I need to be able to speak Arabic ?

The simple answer is no but, as in all countries, an attempt to converse in the native language is much appreciated by the locals.

Staff in most riads, particularly those in the bigger towns and cities, are multi-lingual speaking English, French and Arabic and maybe Berber too. In the more rural communities Arabic, Berber and French tend to dominate. Most urban Moroccans understand some English; however, it can also be useful to know some French, which is widely spoken in towns and by the younger generation, or to carry a phrase book.

If you are visiting Taroudant with Naturally Morocco please note that we offer Arabic lessons  (or Berber or French on request) or as part of our Real Morocco programme.
