Mountains, Wilderness and Wildlife

We recommend the High Atlas and Anti Atlas Mountains in the south for their climate and scenery of high peaks, (snowcapped in winter), cultivated valleys, remote Berber villages, streams and waterfalls. Both offer superb walking and trekking opportunities all year round but, if you want to scale the higher peaks, March - November only.

The High Atlas Mountains
most easily accessed from Taroudant (30 mins) and from Marrakech (1 hour)

The Anti Atlas Mountains including the Jbel Siroua
most easily accessed from Taroudant (30 mins) and Agadir (30 mins)

The Atlantic Coast

We recommend Oualidia, a small settlement overlooking a beautiful lagoon (3 hrs from Marrakech or Casablanca) or Sidi Rabat in the Souss Massa National Park, 1 hour S of Agadir, both perfect spots for birdwatching

Activities
Staying in Berber villages gives a great insight into the lives of Berbers and you will find the people you meet extremely hospitable.
Trekking & Walking - Ouirgane in the High Atlas Mountains near Marrakech.
Trekking & Walking - Talaouine in the Western High Atlas Mountains near Taroudant. Lusher valleys and less visited by tourists.

Mountain Passes
If you'd like to see the mountains from the road, the quieter routes are:

• the Tiz n Test Pass (Taroudant- Marrakech), the most spectacular, off which you can visit the atmospheric partially restored Tin Mal Mosque, one of only 2 that non Muslims can enter in Morocco
• the Tizi n Taghatine Pass (Taroudant- Zagora or Skoura), a lower level route passing through the volcanic Jbel Siroua and famous saffron and carpet producing centres

or the much busier route:

• the spectacular Tizi n Tickha Pass (Marrakech – Ouarzazate and Skoura), off which the Glaoui Kasbah, Telouet is well worth a visit

Gorges
There are a number of beautiful gorges including:

• The spectacular Todra and Dades Gorges are quite close to each other on the S edge of the High Atlas Mountains, E of Skoura. The Dades is recommended as less frequented by tourists and very spectacular
• the Oued Nfiss Gorges are on the N edge of the High Atlas Mountains near Ouirgane, 1 hour from Marrakech
• the Aoulouz Gorge on the road between Taroudant/Agadir and the desert
  

Places to stay in the High Atlas Mountains near Marrakech

• Ouirgane is a very small town in a wonderful setting in the High Atlas, between Marrakech & Taroudant. A good base for guided walks or treks into the surrounding area which includes some spectacular gorges. 1 hour Marrakech.
• Imlil is a village at the end of a valley where most treks to Djebel Toubkal, 4167 metres, N Africa's highest peak, begins. 1.5 hrs Marrakech
