Fès - The City and its region

Fez is one of Morocco's gems and one of Islam's greatest cities, where people still live and work as they have done since medieval times:

• the most authentic of Morocco’s Imperial Cities, has an almost totally unspoilt world heritage site in the medina of Fez el Bali, recognised as one of the finest in the world by UNESCO
• Its 9000 tiny winding alleyways, barely wide enough for a donkey or mule, the only form of transport, create interest and excitement at every turn
• capital of Morocco for more than 400 years, it is the country’s spiritual, religious and culinary centre
• accommodation offered in accessible and in very elegant courtyard houses (riads) in the accessible Batha and Ziat districts of Fez el Bali or in part of a palace in Meknes
• as well as the city sights, there are many interesting places to visit within 90 minutes by road or train

Activities and Outings

The City: There are many wonderful sights including the Medrersa Attarine, the mighty Karaouine Mosque, the Nejjarine Fountain, the Batha Museum and the magnificent palaces of Fez el-Bali as well as in nearby Fes Djedid the Royal Palace, the Mellah and souks. The Festival of World Sacred Music takes place in June.

Relaxation: If you just want to relax nearer to home, all riads have a private sun terrace and some have pools, though most are small or plunge pools. Massages and visits to the local hammam (steam baths) can be arranged for you on request, but some riads have their own hammam.

Nearby: Here are some possibilities:

• The Roman ruins at Volubilis, (a World Heritage site), is the site of the largest and best preserved Roman ruins in Morocco, particularly noted for its superb mosaic floors. 1 hour 25 mins. away
• Meknes, a quieter version of Fez, famous for the decorative gate of Bab El Mansour, the Mausoleum of Moualy Ismail, ruler of Morocco in the 17th century, and Dar Jamai Museum of Moroccan art. 1 hour away
• Moulay Idriss - one of the country's most important spiritual sites - 1 hour 15 minutes away
• Middle Atlas Mountains – walking or horse riding
  Sefrou where in June the cherry harvest is celebrated - 25 minutes away
  Ifrane an Alpine style resort and gateway to cedar forests. 1.5 hours away
• Spas Hot Springs/Spa of Moulay Yacoub reputed to cure skin complaints and rheumatism; detoxing and de-stressing thalassotherapy spa treatments- 25 minutes away
  Sidi Harazem springs (mineral water) 15 minutes away

Weather
Fez has a pleasant climate. Note that we advise ground floor or air conditioned rooms in July and August and especially from November until January you take warm clothes for the evenings. April to November are the driest months.
